Quite recently the DVSA published the top ten reasons people fail a driving test. We thought we would have a look and see if we can help explain things a little. We decided to apply it to our experience of why people fail tests around the Guisborough test centers. Our Driving Lessons Guisborough – Part 7 article looks at the fourth most common reason for failing your driving test at Middlesbrough test center.
Coming in at number four is –
4. Junctions Turning Right
When we first saw this fault we initially associate it with turning right major road to minor road. This would involve crossing the path of oncoming traffic. A misjudgment that caused an oncoming vehicle to slow down, stop, swerve, or swear at you would fail your driving test. This fault would however, be marked as observations junctions. This is covered in part 10 of our series of top ten reasons people fail the driving test.
So what were the faults for Junctions Turning Right?
The number one cause of fails for junctions turning right is going right at a roundabout in the left-hand lane. Unless road signs or road markings direct you otherwise the left lane or left position is usually used for –
Turning left
or
Going straight ahead
It’s quite easy for the same fault to be marked in different categories depending on whats going on. The examiners will mark it in the most relevant section depending on the situations at the time.
The fault would normally only be marked in Junctions Turning Right if there were no road markings or road signs at the roundabout. If there are signs or markings it would most probably be marked for response to road markings and road signs. Here’s our blog that covers this fault.
Here’s some more in detail info on roundabouts from the highway code.
Road Position For a Right Turn
Another common failure for Junctions turning right is the position of your car on the road at junctions. If you see the yellow car above it’s positioned correctly for a right emerge. It’s positioned close to the centerline but not over it. This positioning shows road users behind they intend to turn right. If the red car wishes to turn left into the junction the yellow car is not obstructing its path.
Positioning too far to the left of the junction or over the centerline to the right could get you a serious fault on your test.
