In the light of new rules as of 2018, motorway driving is now permitted on UK driving lessons.  With that in mind we here at Pass Me Faster think its worth picking into with our Motorway Driving Lesson Tips. 

Furthermore we feel its our duty to make sure everyone is fully prepared for motorway driving.

Motorway Users

Certain road users are not permitted to use motorways –

What is a Motorway

A motorway is a major road that has been specially built for long distances for the purpose of fast travel.  Motorways can have several lanes and special places where traffic joins on and exits the road.  Most motorways will also have a hard shoulder which is an additional lane for emergency use only!

In order to keep Motorways flowing safely traffic must use the left lane for normal driving, keeping the right lanes free for overtaking.

Firstly – 

RED

Motorway studs are situated along the hard shoulder of both motorways and dual carriageways.  In a word the left side if your in the left lane.

AMBER

GREEN

The Two Second Rule on Motorway Driving Lesson Tips

When driving above 40 MPH we must pay extra attention to our following distances.

A two second gap is the minimum following distance providing that the weather conditions are good.  The two second rule is designed with the intention of avoiding rear end shunts or accidents in the event of heavy breaking ahead of you. 

Something that must be remembered is that this two second rule must be doubled in wet weather and furthermore multiplied by ten in icy or snowy weather.

Motorway Signs

As to help us identify we are travelling on a motorway the colour of the road signs are always blue.  There are numerous different signs including exit distances and destination signs which are there to give motorists general information. 

Although some of the signs may be to the side of the road they may also be found suspended above the lanes.

Speed Limits

The speed limit for most vehicles is 70 MPH or 112 KPH.  There are some acceptations, for example large goods vehicles, vehicles towing trailers or caravans and large heavy loaded vehicles.
