Driving Lessons Guisborough – Part 3 is the next in our series of ten posts on the biggest reasons for failing a driving test in and around the Guisborough area.
Coming in at number 8 of the ten reasons people fail a driving test is –
Positioning Normal Driving
The main cause of failure on test for positioning normal driving is drifting too far to either side of your lane. Judging the center can be difficult when you start driving. Try not to forget the helpful tips your instructor gave you.
Some of the things our instructors teach is to –
- Look as far ahead as possible and slightly over to the left curb edge
- Line the left curb edge a quarter (1/4) of the way over your windscreen or on very narrow streets in the middle
- Have quick little glances into your side mirrors to check if you’re central
If the examiner feels like your positioning is going to endanger another road user they will mark it as a serious fault. If you notice things going a bit off, correct it quickly, you may only pick up a minor fault.
In And Out Of The Test Centre
A common fault we’ve noticed is students getting lane positioning wrong entering and exiting the test center car park. The entrances to test centers can be quite narrow so just take your time. The examiner may go easy if it’s the start of your test and there was no danger to anyone else. Coming back to the test center. remember the test hasn’t finished until your parked up with the engine switched off!
Roundabouts Position Normal Driving
Another common position normal driving fault is straight-lining roundabouts. The usual rule unless signposts or road markings suggest otherwise is –
- left lane to turn left
- Left lane or position to the left for straight ahead
What some people tend to do is approach positioned left, enter the roundabout and cut straight ahead into the right lane. Try to keep the car tucked as much as possible on the left side or lane as you go around the roundabout. The two main causes for the fault are –
- looking over to the right for too long on approach (scan to the left to watch your position)
- Approaching too fast and entering the roundabout at full velocity
If someone is next to you to the right on approach to the roundabout, cutting the lane could cause an accident.
Middle Lane Hogging
One of the main reasons for test failures involving lane positioning is not using the left lane for normal driving. If it’s safe legal and necessary you can make progress and use the right lane for overtaking. Just remember to get back to the left lane when safe.
Usually if somebody undertakes you in the left lane it would go as a serious fault.
So keep to the left lane as much as possible!
Driving Lessons Guisborough – Part 3
Keeping your position on the road is vital to safe driving. Remember your positioning is the most powerful form of signal. Other drivers will judge what when and where you will be going from the position of your car.
Making progress and using the right lane to overtake is an essential skill to driving with confidence and purpose. Just remember your normal driving lane is usually the left lane. When you finish with the right lane move back over to the left.
