9. Response To Road Signs And Road Markings
When it comes to driving test failures involving road signs and road markings, without doubt, the main areas for concern are spiral roundabouts. Let’s start there?
Spiral Roundabouts
There’s plenty of spiral roundabouts in Middlesbrough to deal with. Above is a picture of the Wilton Tree Roundabout near Teessport. This one can be tricky!
What students tend to do is drift out of their lane into the path of vehicles in the lane next to them. This is usually moving from a left or middle lane cutting over into the right lane. It’s easily done, most spiral roundabouts guide you out to the left when turning right. In fact its a lot earlier than a normal roundabout and that’s why they’re so confusing.
The road markings may also be worn down and difficult to see.
The best advice is to get out and practice them. There are about 3 different spiral roundabouts in the Middlesbrough area so your instructor should help show you round them.
Road signs on approach should give you early warning of where to position on approach so keep a lookout early on.
Keep an eye on road markings on approach and as you drive around it.
The main thing to remember is to stay in your lane. Even if you go the wrong way it doesn’t matter, as long as you go the wrong way safely.
You can’t fail for doing the wrong thing right!
Yellow Box Junctions
The yellow box junction above is one of our all-time favorites. Students usually find yellow box junctions quite easy to see, so the problem is not fully understanding the rule.
The Highway Code States ”You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.
So basically the only time you can stop on it is to make a right turn. The usual problems are –
- Students stop before the box when making a right turn
- When going straight ahead or left, not looking far enough ahead to work out if they can get off the box before driving onto it.
Our best advice for the box junctions is to remember the highway code rule above! Secondly try to spot them early by looking well ahead. Thirdly develop your planning and try to gauge how the traffic in front of you is moving along.
Driving Lessons Guisborough – Part 2
Road signs and road markings will be dotted around everywhere during your travels so keep your eyes peeled. If you get used to this on driving lessons it shouldn’t be long before you’re a master. With the reliability of Sat Navs getting much better, try not to let your road markings and sign following skills dwindle.
