On average we found that it takes approximately 30 to 40 hours of tuition to prepare a student for a driving test.  Instead of opting for a regular lesson plan of say three or four months to cover the lessons an intensive course can be scheduled over a shorter time period of say one or two weeks.

Your course tutors job is not just to help prepare you for a lifetime of safe driving but also to get you ready for your driving test.  With the truncated timetable of an intensive course there’s no doubt going to be a 50% increase in lesson intensity for your instructor.

On a more regular lesson plan an instructor would generally be working through one or two faults at a time.  An intensive course could see the guy next door juggling four or five faults simultaneously.

I’m sure you’ll all agree 50% more for 30% extra is still a win win in anybody’s eyes!!

Although intensive course instructors are trained to do this, it is going to effect their energy levels.  With levels depleting 50% faster, their working hours per day will be reduced considerably.

If you take a look at the regular weekly hourly lesson plan there are a couple of things to consider. Although great for dipping your toe in the water for the first couple of lessons think about this-

• Is an hour really long enough by the time you’ve recapped the last lesson, made a plan and warmed yourself up?
• Think about spacing your lessons out weekly in – between your other commitments (work, college, holidays etc).  Is this the best way to retain information?

Like me writing this blog it takes at least twenty minutes for me to get into things. 

An intensive course kind of works the same way.  Once your in the zone there’s no stopping you.  Lets have a think about a conventional one hour driving lesson – 

1. Recap or analysis of last session
2. Goal setting for this session
3. Setting the car up for you to drive
4. Deciding on a training area
5. Analysis and recapping the lesson on completion and planning next weeks goals

Yes the above fractions of a driving lesson are crucial for deep effective learning to take place but it may not leave much time for when you do hit the road.

You will no doubt stop from time to time to analyse your performance and form new goals and objectives.  Nevertheless longer session times will allow you to keep yourself in the zone.
